Stumpf is firmly a family affair. Founded in 1992 by former doctor János, he now runs it with son Péter, a graduate in agriculture. Today they have 20 hectares of vineyards, nine of which are in Nagy Eged – the finest vine-growing area of this region. Kékfrankos (more commonly known by its Austrian name, Blaufrankisch) thrives on the mountain's ancient volcanic soils, where János and Péter keep yields low to concentrate flavours. Much like Old World Pinot Noir, this has bright flavours of red fruit and a delicious savoury character. Silky smooth tannins make this an excellent pairing for pasta pomodoro with fresh basil.
